Hi there! My name is Hilary Tsui and I recently graduated with a Masters degree in Criminological Research from the University of Cambridge (Newnham College 2024). I previously completed my Bachelors in Psychology (Honours) and Communication from Simon Fraser University, in Canada.

I enjoy teaching students of all ages; whether you're a parent hoping to help better your child's English essay-writing skills or a professional seeking to gain confidence in their English speaking skills, I am here for you!

I have been teaching English to students of all ages since 2019.

My teaching is rooted in educational psychological research, primarily intrinsic motivation and mastery learning. I believe in instilling intrinsic motivation as students can find joy and reward in the act of learning and improving; this perspective is a healthy approach to education. (Extrinsic motivation, on the other hand, is about students striving to learn and improve in order to become better than their peers.) Mastery learning believes that everyone is capable of succeeding in any subject, as long as students put in the effort and persist. This approach is highly beneficial as it focuses on the learning journey rather than the outcome, meaning that students will develop resilience in the face of challenges.

Thus, my teaching philosophy is this: focus on the journey (i.e., the learning itself), not the outcome. As long as students continue to try their best, put in the effort to improve, and persist in the face of challenges or difficulties, that is good enough for me.
