Passionate PhD psychology tutor blending in research and graduate experience

Hello, I am Sammi. I am based in Hong Kong, and have recently been conferred a PhD in Affective Neuroscience, and a 1st class Honours for my BSc in Psychology. I am now working on a part-time basis as a graduate research assistant. I greatly enjoy researching and teaching psychology and related subjects. I am excited to promote the enjoyment and benefits of studying the relationship between mind and behaviour.

I have been awarded the Outstanding Cambridge Learner Awards for gaining the highest mark in Hong Kong for Cambridge International A and AS Level Psychology. As a PhD student, I have also received the Reaching Out Award from the HKSAR government to attend an overseas Summer School, where I took courses related to healthcare data science and big data to enhance my neuroscience research.

Additionally, I have completed the Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (CTLHE) and achieved the status of an Associate Fellow of AdvanceHE. The Associate Fellowship is a recognition of achievement under the UK Professional Standards Framework for teaching and learning support in higher education.

The core belief underlying my educational philosophy is that the relationship between a teacher and students is akin to working together in a partnership; where both parties participate in and initiate knowledge exchange. This way both teacher and learners stay constantly up to date with each others’ way of thinking, enabling the teacher to optimise lessons to accommodate the learners’ needs, and allowing for ease of communication between teacher and learners.

My pedagogic approach respects the ability and potential of students, hence instead of confining students to a conventional lecture-based framework where the teacher mostly imparts information and students sit still and listen; I think students thrive more where brainstorming and knowledge transactions are valued. Students should also be an active part of learning process where they develop qualities of a confident yet curious critical thinker.

In addition, I enjoy exploring philosophy and ethics. I have worked in neuroscience research, administration, and psychological services, providing me with experience in reviewing and synthesising ideas. I am also skilled in writing and editing reports and articles. Furthermore, I have received volunteer training in mental health, including psychological first aid, crisis counselling, and rehabilitation, and have engaged as a support volunteer.
